Simian Line and The Tight Rope

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

Insight from the American Academy of Hand Analysis ~ by Kay Packard
Subject: The Tight Rope – Mastering Communications
Marking in the Hand: Simian Line – Heart and Head Lines entwined in Union on one or both hands.

Interpretation: A level of intense behavior is associated with the owner of a simian line(s). The line acts as a divide separating the upper (abstract) and lower (physical) areas of the palm. The divide is like a tight rope, and walking it takes extreme balance, focus, training, skill and courage. The movie “Man on Wire” depicts the drive and interior discipline needed to walk the rope. Now imagine the difficulty if the rope being walked is being pulled in two different directions, like a game of tug of war. Whoa! That is the challenge facing those with a simian line(s). They find themselves quickly walking, if not sprinting, back and forth between opposites. “Today I want carpet, tomorrow I want wood floors”. And it’s installed within 24 hours by their own hands!

Another challenge for the owner of this marker is to communicate effectively. The thinking system (head) is tightly woven with the feelings (heart) system and therefore usually influences how the words flow out of her mouth. While she feels she is being very clear in her words, the person or group she’s speaking to may misunderstand her. Likewise, words coming into her ears from another may also get garbled up and misinterpreted. This can be frustrating for both parties. Just trying to keep up with the lightning fast progression in a conversation with the owner of a simian line can be exhausting, but very exciting!

There is internal tension here similar to a snake shedding its skin. The old skin is released and the mind/body prepared for the new. Yet the ‘new’ brings uncertainties that can feel awkward and potentially unbearable. This gives the impression of a ‘critical edge’. Their volatility isn’t about another person; it is purely about their internal struggle to understand their own emotional excitement, distress, joy, restlessness, frustration and dissatisfactions.

Recommendation for the Owner: Allow and accept yourself for your tendencies to act/react and then retreat. You seem to feel more than others and you might not understand why they are not as intense as you, or vice-versa, why you are so intense. There is nothing wrong with you. You are amazing! You have tremendous energy for accomplishment and are learning to effectively harness and apply that power. You ‘over-process’ on the inside, so others may see you as either a run away freight train, or aloof and uncaring. Your job is to communicate in a variety of ways to be understood. Practice, practice, practice. Give yourself time to percolate those intense feeling-thoughts, and be sure to have a physical outlet to release them in order  to avoid less healthy ways to calm down. If you feel a desperate need reinvent yourself – hang in there!  You may suddenly transport to a new level in your personal evolutionary journey.  Vigor and drive compel your walk on the tight rope.  Your path of great potential is being a Communications Master!

Relationship Compatibility

Monday, September 19th, 2011

by Kay Packard

Relationships are core to every aspect of our life.  Imagine the number of relationship opportunities you have in a day.  You talk, text and listen.  Your body emotes and integrates. How we engage with others depends on endless factors.  We can be attracted, distracted, repulsed or neutral to other people.  Dependencies on relationships with individuals will vary from person to person. Friends, mates, co-workers, children, siblings, parents, strangers and more comprise the roles of relationships.

Each person has a different priority in maintaining relationship, to what level and how intensely.  People inclined to be more introverted than extroverted maintain a different attitude and motivation toward relationship than do those who are more extroverted.  Likewise, ‘thinkers’ will engage more logically than ‘feelers’ who live more through their emotions.

Success in relationship depends largely on you knowing what is important to you in general and at any given moment.  It also depends on you noticing how you react to words, language, beliefs, and actions of other people.  The people around us and how we observe them points directly back to ourselves and the relationship we have with our self

In the world of hand analysis, each person has a life purpose, a life lesson and a designated life path.  Each person is on a particular training program at Life University.  This training program can be decoded from the vibrational imprint of the fingerprints.  The potential of the soul can be read from those prints and plays a part in relationships.

Key to the Heart

The heart lines in the hand shows the relationship approach of the owner.  By interpreting the heart line types in the hands you get substantial clue as to the inclinations, preferences and requirements of the affections for self and others.

Hand shapes show the personality traits of the owners.  The hand shape can show you the character a person will display in relationship.

Identification and interpretation of gift markings can tremendously help to determine talents and challenges the owner will encounter as an individual.  Those gifted characteristics may also be revealed in relationship

Overall the consciousness one holds will affect the behavior of every single interaction in relationship.  Consciousness is Self awareness; how tuned-in one is with her own inner-operations.  I like to equate Self awareness to a level of self-love and attentiveness to a style of loving.

The hands hold a key to one’s disposition for relationship.  Through relationship people can heal.  The deepest healing involves love and the healing of love.  Love is more than an emotion; it is a power unto itself.

Consider this power of love as you entwine with another person whether it be on facebook, texting, talking or embracing.  Are you open to learning more about your style in relationship? Do you have a mate to join you in a couples reading? If so call 559-561-4490 to schedule time for Kay to analyze your hands and fingerprints and articulate your love-style.

Signs

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

by Kay Packard

I recently spent a few days on a stretch of cliffs overlooking the magnificent California coast line. The beaches were stunning and the jagged vertical rock walls put me in awe of the vast ocean.  During the night, with the hotel slider wide open to the sea, I heard the ceaseless waves crashing into the cliff walls. It was an absolute rush!

Well marked ‘caution’ signs were located on the railings near the edges of the cliffs.  However, those signs are in English.  People have to know English to read the signs and that’s IF they pay attention.  Of course it’s obvious not to get too close to the edge… or is it?  Dare devils and risk takers are compelled to see how far they can walk the ledge.  There are also the curious and simple minded who may misplace a foot hold and take a fatal spill.  Cars park within inches of the fence and the edge of a potential fall. Survival would be questionable after tumbling off the rim of one of these cliffs.

In life, how often are you confronted with the ‘jagged edge’?  Do you recognize when you’re approaching an unsteady frontier?  Most people operate on auto-pilot 85% of the time.  What would a ‘jagged edge’ look like to you, in your own life?

Are you the type to get closer and closer to the edge, steer clear entirely, or somewhere in between?  Can you interpret the ‘caution’ signs?  Do you know the language in print?  Are you surrounded by people who rally to boost you to your higher ground?

Life is full of opportunities to experience Divine beauty in all things.  With the splendor comes risk.  Risk is mitigated by knowing how to read the signs.  Tapping into your intuition is quite helpful in times of danger.  The brain will respond to your intuition IF the brain can ‘read the sign’.

Your hands reveal markings that can help you, or anyone, to understand their life path, the best directions to take, how to correct after going off course and how to make sense of the most challenging obstacles.  Talents, potentials, inclinations, and motivations besides the life purpose and life lessons can be pinpointed in the hands and fingerprints to help a person live in their most empowered self.

If you want to learn to read hands, you can become skilled at identifying and articulating the trail markers around the cliffs of life. The abyss can be bypassed with greater ease.  If by chance someone has fallen off the edge with no apparent way up you can offer hope and guidance.  It’s all clearly mapped out in the hands and fingerprints.

The AAHA is offering a bonanza of training classes for the beginner and intermediate student.  See the curriculum tab for details on this training program offered at the AAHA.

Inner Revolution

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

by Kay Packard

Krishnamurti said, “Change in society is of secondary importance; that will come about naturally, inevitably, when you as a human being bring about this change in yourself.”

Only you can create the change you want to see in the world.  To see differently you must first examine your own thoughts and actions.  Then do something about that which no longer serves you.  Consider one thing in your life that isn’t working for you anymore.  Perhaps it’s an outdated belief, a relationship, a job, a personality trait, an addiction, a living condition, or simply a word.  Visualize that ‘something’ that is not working for you any longer.

We can really get stuck in things that divide us from our core Self.  On one hand we desire peace and harmony and on the other we thrive on problem solving or believing ‘this will get better’.  Your intuitive self already knows the best way.  However, your patterns fixate you to the reoccurring and comfortable routine.

If there is division within the self then there is conflict.  Conflict is actually an excellent force toward that which you do want.  So, do, be grateful for some level of internal disagreement and stress in your life.  However, use your discernment skills to assess how much internal clash is helpful for you.

In my 20’s I worked in the Propulsion Lab of Hughes Space and Communications Company.  To position a satellite in space, liquid fuel was stored in tanks, carried through titanium tubing and ignited to create forceful flames for thrusting and boosting.  That burning fire is a source used to maneuver the spacecraft into the precise location and to keep it in position during its mission.  Exacting balance is required and combustion is actually a pathway to stability.

Awakening

The balancing act of life requires opposites.  Transcendence of opposites brings a level of freedom because we are no longer attached to one side or the other.  To evolve we must experience the negative and the positive.  This doesn’t necessarily require discipline and control if the pattern can be recognized and modified or even released.  THIS is tricky business.  It’s not easy to see that which sits right before our very eyes.  A certain kind of ‘seeing’ is needed.

Do you see with eyes of attachment or detachment?  Which might be more useful?  Or might a combination of the two be the best approach for positive change?  Only you can decide for yourself related to your particular ‘something’ that you’d like to alter, modify, transform or revolutionize.

Suggestions for your inner revolution:

  • Pinpoint your Truth – now
  • Honor and aim for that Truth
  • Do what it takes to stay on course
  • Delight in your path

Tapping into Emotional Clarity

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

by Kay Packard

If you have eight loops (see article on loops) on your finger tips, maybe seven, you are The Lover.  The Lover is enrolled in a Life University program to experience a full range of feelings, fully and completely, in the moment with the appropriate intensity regardless of the perceived response of another.

These loop patterns on your fingerprints equate to a Life of Love with emotional upheaval and penetrating clarity.

Emotional clarity results when one’s own feelings are registered, experienced and released.  Clarity can only be recognized after going through the opposite of clarity.  The opposite of clarity is ambiguity, uncertainty and doubt. This can trigger rant and rave.  It’s usually easier for the Lover to stuff the feelings deeply; to tuck them away as you would with something you don’t want to look at, but can’t let go of.

I was just explaining this process to Snowflake Logan who is 9 years old.  Logan has enough loops to qualify for the life-program of Love.  I asked Logan if he had something he didn’t want to look at, that he has tucked away.  With widened eyes of fright he answered: Gollum!

Gollum from Lord of the Rings

Gollum is a creepy character from the movie “Lord of the Rings”. Gollum is scary and hardly trustworthy but there is a legitimate reason to pay attention to him (in the movie).  To my 9 year old listener I explained the value in looking at and processing the uncomfortable feelings.  He said. “I am not going to move beyond Gollum.  I’ll never look at him again!”  Yet, Logan won’t throw Gollum away.

The Lover on the master path is one who stays present with his/her feelings and allows them to flow – no matter how terrifying it may seem.  There is a “Logan” in all of us who will develop.  Tools and practice helps.

“Tapping” is a tool that can help release the scary feelings – fear, anger, excessive grief, panic, dread, pain and more.  The first part of the process is to address the ‘hard stuff’, to feel it, to find it in your body, then to release and replace with the favorable. You can replace feelings and thoughts that no longer serve you.  Please note I am not a licensed therapist.  I am offering this to you as a certified EFT Practitioner and Master Hand Analyst.  Check in with your Inner Guidance system to see if this is a suitable approach for you.  I have found it to be very effective in a vast number of scenarios.

To try it:

With your right index and middle finger held together, tap on the outer edge of your left hand.  This is called the Karate Chop point.  Tap there and say to yourself:

Even though I might be nervous, or feel sick, about revealing my feelings, I completely love and accept myself and give myself permission to feel.

Even though I’ve stuffed a lot of my feelings over the years and I didn’t have the tools, training or support to express, I now know it is safe, healthy and liberating to feel. I am free to discover, explore and feel a full range of feelings.

Even though I may have hidden from my feelings by blaming others  or expressing through rage, I now accept full responsibility for my emotions and I DEEPLY and COMPLETELY accept every feeling that runs through me.

I am open to the wonder and beauty of each and every feeling.  I am open to emotional clarity like never before. I choose to be open to full emotional expression, now.  I am a genuine Lover.

Take a deep breath and be still a moment.  Relish in awareness of your deeper and more profound self.  If you feel the urge, let me know how this works for you. Email kay@handfactor.com

Self-Surveillance for Success at Life-You

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

By Kay Packard

Have you heard of Pareto’s Law? You may have heard of the 80/20 Principle. The Law, as an example, demonstrates that 20% of workers accomplish 80% of productivity in any business setting. Vilfredo Pareto was an economist and philosopher (and more) who determined that 80% of the wealth was generated by 20% of the population. He revealed that 80% of the land in Italy was owned by 20% of the inhabitants.

I leaned about the Pareto Rule over 20 years ago during my corporate life as a statistician. My analytical mind was put to use identifying and tracking metrics in the Hughes satellite factory in El Segundo, California. The goal – improvement – only happens through measuring and responding to those measurements. Root Cause Analysis and observation leads to success – guaranteed.

In the book “The 4-Hour Workweek” by Timothy Ferris, he suggests identifying the 20% of your sources that produce 80% of your desired results and happiness. Evaluating this theory at a personal level is quite insightful.

What are your ‘desired results” and what does “happiness” mean to you? You may want to get a pen and paper and jot down what comes to mind. Taking 5 minutes to read this and respond to your Inner Voice may drastically and irrevocably advance you toward your ideal life.

“Simplicity requires ruthlessness” Ferris says. To figure out what is most ‘important’ to do he suggests that you pretend you had a heart attack and can only work two hours a day. What would you complete if you could ‘do’ for only two hours a day? To obtain that which brings you the most happiness and joy, what would you do? How would you be? Who would you be in those two hours? Getting to this realization takes courage, awareness and bottom line thinking.

During the development of my latest hand analysis course, I’ve been contemplating the head line (in the hand) called “The Ruthless Mind”, named by Richard Unger. I call it the ‘Bottom Line Mind.” See Figure 1 with the head line traversing the palm with a flip up at the end. Look to see if you have one on your hand.

This head line indicates a super processor with the ability to get to the bottom line at lightning speed. This person is aware of what is really going on behind the scenes.  She can condense the two-hour movie script into two sentences.  She created the CliffNotes for “War and Peace” by Leo Tolstoy….and then simplified it even more.

If you have a head line, with a flip up at the end, toward the fingers, you’re probably not even reading this article any longer because you know where I’m ‘headed’.   However, the other head line types might be curious.

Even if you don’t have this ‘Bottom Line Mind’ head line, you can still take a shortcut.  Engage your internal computer to carry out a sequence of arithmetic or logical operations that serve you

Sizzle up your surveillance system.  It’s obviously working for you in its own perfect way. And you can change the integrated circuitry to execute instructions for your happiness!

It’s OK to be ruthless in your Self inquiry.  Get brutally and radically honest about your-good-stuff.  Take a moment and quickly identify the 20% of your actions that bring you 80% of your delight.  Think about this; 80% of the joy, bliss, satisfaction, peace, success – or whatever your-good-stuff definition is, comes from ONLY 20% of your CONSCIOUS actions.  Don’t believe me. Experiment yourself.

Your computer program may rely on other people’s expectations, potential negative responses or on-going criticisms.  For now, put them all on pause, or hit the delete key.

You are programmable.  You have a code.  You’re constantly calculating. This is Life-You.  Say “Yes” to “You”.  If needed, insert a new micro chip and get to the bottom line of your source of joy. Be still and go within.

If you feel the urge, report back to me. Your input will be gladly assimilated into my microprocessor.

Inquiring into Intuition

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

by Kay Packard

Do you have a flair for inspiration, insights, revelations, visions, dreams and /or intuition? There are a number of markers that can be identified in the hands that indicate staggering talent and inclination for intuitive vision. I came across one of those stunning markers this past week during a reading. She had a beautiful, clear and perfect whorl in the lower and outer area of the palm called the Moon zone. Open the pdf link Intuition Inquiry to see prints and the entire article.

It’s extraordinary for a whorl fingerprint pattern to show up in the palm of the hand. When it does, it calls for special attention and must be discussed. It’s an eye catching design in nature like the spot on a leopard or a hump on the back of a camel. You just can’t help but notice it and be in awe.

A talent is the ability, flair or aptitude for something. Sometimes the use of a talent looks to be simple and naturally given to the owner. However, talents need to be nurtured and developed. An inclination is a preference in behavior. Certain markers in the hands show innate proficiency and affinity for use. With more and more practice the associated skill becomes expertise.

In some cases the owner of the moon whorl, or other intuitive skin carvings, may possess an obstruction to awareness of their perceptive abilities. The question that came to me during our session: What is intuition?

Our busy world has shattered the telescopic vision that is accompanied with heart and soul. American Society has been heavily rewarded for the use of reason and logic. It is important to have the ability to think, consider and analyze. To round out our human faculties, we must appraise intuition and its value?

At the moment of my client’s question, “What is intuition?” I was at a loss for the most profound answer. My logical mind was triggered and I quickly searched my internal super computer for an answer to impart. After a deep breath and concentrated eye contact, I hoped that the answer would transfer from me to her without words – after all intuition is about impressions and ‘knowing’. I didn’t see that working either. One simple description that came forth was: Think of yourself driving down an open and deserted country road when unexpectedly you let your foot off the accelerator without a reason. The car slows down just enough for a deer to leap across the road in front of you and all you see are her rear hooves escaping the scene – without a scratch. No thinking was involved, right? There was neither time nor need for deliberation.

Her question launched me onto an expedition to more deeply understand and better articulate this unseen world.

That evening I had a discussion with my gal pals on the topic of intuition. They’re all moms. One told me of an experience she had where she was walking into Ross clothing store when she was pregnant with her first child. For some reason she happened to notice the license plate of a car that was parked in front of the main doors into the store. She memorized the license plate, for whatever ‘reason’. While shopping inside the store she heard the clerk yelling, “Stop that woman.” The woman was stealing clothing and making her expeditious exit. When the police came, my friend had remembered the license plate number and gave it promptly to the police.

Another gal pal explained that she and a girl friend were driving home one dark night. They were on a quiet country road about two miles from one of their homes. A vehicle with a powerful police light was following them attempting to pull them over. They hadn’t done anything wrong. There were no other cars that may have been affected. They were confused at the reason for being wrestled to the side of the road. My friend said “we’re almost home, just keep driving – don’t stop.” Who doesn’t stop when police lights are hot on your tail? They didn’t. They turned off the road into the neighborhood and the ‘police’ car kept on going. The next week there was a report in the paper about a girl who was pulled over by the ‘police’ and beaten up and raped. The acknowledged intuition saved my friend and her friend from a potential tragedy.

Yesterday, a friend and colleague invited me to look at a plethora of books on healing she was recently given. The only one I picked out and brought home has a section clearly defining Intuition – as much as words can be used to describe the phenomenon. How synchronistic is that? There is an answer for every question. Or is there a question for every answer?

In The Sufi Message of Hazrat Inayat Khan, he says Insight shows itself in aspects of impression, intuition, inspiration, dreams and revelations. Reason and intuition are competitors and both are needed and have value. How is the use of intuition versus reason distinguished? During a situation intuition usually comes up first. Then thought takes over. Since thought comes after the first hunch or impression, the thought gets the primary attention which then motivates final action.

To develop the intuition this Sufi mystic says, “The best thing would be first to try and catch the intuition and distinguish and know and recognize it as intuition; and then to reason it out.” Impeding, self doubt of the messages must be replaced with self-confidence for successful inquiry into intuition.

Khan also wrote, “Intuition is the faculty of the heart that feels deeply, be it a man or woman; the quality of intuition belongs to a sympathetic heart.”

Intuitive inclinations and talents appear in the hands as:
• The whorl in the Moon zone (above)
• Arc around that same area in the palm
• Six pointed asterisk in that area
• A series of vertical lines on the mount just under the pinkie finger
• Six pointed asterisk in the middle section of the thumb
• Star at the very bottom center of the palm
• And more

Everyone has the capability to intuit. You don’t need a secret symbol in your hand to tap into the silent source of awareness. The marker brings crystal clear clarity to me, the hand analyst, for the owner to notice and give considerable contemplation to their Divinely given gift. At their worst, these individuals ignore the gift and isolate themselves from all possibilities of deeper awareness. At their best, these folks help others to unlock the secret door to the sacred knowledge behind inspiration, revelation, impressions, dreams and intuition. How cool is that!

What’s the value of intuition? It helps us access our core identity, our deepest interior, our most natural state of being; perhaps, heavenly living at its best. For the more practical person intuition can offer a solution to a mind-boggling problem. Let’s ask Einstein.

What are your insights about intuition?

Feel free to reply through postal, electronic or cosmic mail. I’m ready to receive.

Composite Whorls ~ The Flip Side

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

by Kay Packard

Each fingerprint has a ‘micro-life’ of its own.  There is an announcement programmed within the design of each glyph depending on the finger where it resides.  Just like nature, with her assortment of patterns, so too do the fingerprints reflect a precise illustration.  That message plays out in the ‘macro-life’ of the owner.

Let’s delve into the Composite Whorl.  There are a variety of types of whorls that can be seen with the naked eye.  If needed, a magnifying glass will help with your inspection.

Whorl with regular circular core

Whorl with a Spiral Core

Composite Whorl with an S Core

The pattern must have two tri-radii to be considered a whorl. See the tiny triangle-like lines on the outer and lower sides of each whorl.  Open the The Flip Side pdf to see the red arrows pointing to each tri-radii.  In the Composite Whorl the core is looping back around itself. The center looks like an “S”.

If you or anyone you know has a Composite Whorl, with an “S” you may likely alternate between two specific aspects related to the print location.

Location Matters – This fancy print can be found on any finger, thumb or impressed into the palm. The “S” Whorl reveals opposites – opposites of what?  See the right and left hand finger descriptions on the hand maps below to better understand the opposites that are burrowed into each finger tip.

The description on the top is the consciousness experienced while in the ‘on’ position.  The description on the bottom is the interpreted awareness during the ‘off’ position.  The two energies offer an opposing affect.  There is a vacillation between the two.

Composite Whorl Locations and Descriptions on the Left Hand

Right Hand Composite Whorl Locations and Descriptions

Now, identify the location for your “S” Whorl.  If you have one, or more, you’ll most likely be seeing movie scenes featuring both sides related to the associated finger it lives on.  These movie clips can feature others’ lives as well as your own. These etchings have been imprinted on the owner since five (5) months prior to birth.  The designs of all fingerprints are unalterable.  This blinking effect of the “S” won’t go away or change.  What you can change is your reaction toward the experiences you ‘see’.

Life Path Options for the “S” – Junior, Advanced and Master

Junior Path:  You feel stuck when in the ‘off’ position.  This is the down side, the bad hair day condition. You may even self-sabotage to remain fixed in the ‘off’ situation.

Advanced Path: You apply the ‘off’ side to get to ‘on’.  You see the ‘off’ as a means to build character and develop.

Master Path: You flip between both sides integrating the two extremes without entertaining an ‘off-balance-reaction’.  You remain evenhanded and perceive beyond the opposites.

For example, I have an “S” on my right thumb (Success and Failure). On a regular basis I experience what I believe as failure and success. It’s a sense (feeling and thought) of failure and success.  I have let the fear of failure prevent me from achieving the results my deepest Self is calling for me to do and be.  After having my hands analyzed I’ve learned to say “Yes to “S””.  Now, my reactions to potential failure are silenced, I honor the call for success in the moment and transcend into a deeper aspect of Self.  Will I always be in this enlightened state?  Who knows?  It’s a learning journey and I’m in for the ride!

On the learning path, one might say “Oh- no, someone save me, I’m in the “off” side (again).”  That pickle is actually a gift.  I’m here to inspire you to say “yes” to “S”!  Take responsibility and embrace the internal squabble.  Use the perception to see your way to awakening to a deeper and more profound facet of your Self.

I’d love to hear back from you if you have an “S” Whorl.  Tell me where you’re at on your path relative to the flip sides of the finger description where it’s located.  If I’ve read your hands and you’d like me to check my files to confirm the possibility of the “S” you might be seeing PLEASE ask me.  I live for this work and the steps toward self realization for everyone.  If you’d like a first time or follow-on reading, let’s talk! Hand Analysis has helped thousands of people add the correct tools to their personal tool kits for manifesting their right life.  The right life = the best life for each particular individual.

In the mean time, don’t let the “off” get in the way of your “on” and beyond!

Plot: Colossal Complexity

Friday, February 4th, 2011

by Kay Packard

There is a special type of head line that is long, extends straight across the hand and terminates about ½ inch before the edge of the palm. Below, blue ink is used to highlight this head line type. Check your own hands to see if you have one. If you, or someone you know has one, ponder the following.

HAL 9000 Head Line

While no one marker in the hand defines a person, some characteristics can be snared in individual markings.

Richard Unger, Director of the International Institute of Hand Analysis, named this head line after the Super Computer in the science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey filmed in 1968. I remember seeing the movie in the theater, but recently watched it again to refresh the details.

HAL 9000 was born in 1992. HAL was the brain and nervous system of the Pan Am space ship that was on a secret mission traveling from Earth to Jupiter.

HAL was the central processing unit that controlled the food supply, fuel consumption, cryogenic human hibernation quarters, pod flight crafts, communications, oxygen, cooling, and everything for the whole space ship. Its job was to detect any problems and flag the errors/failures and malfunctions and to report accordingly.

HAL was highly intelligent. He was the most reliable computer ever made. He was foolproof and incapable of error. HAL was constantly occupied, fully used. ‘He’ talked, he was curious and engaging. He demonstrated emotions so that the crew could better connect with him (perhaps calculated). He knew birth dates and said “Happy Birthday”. He played chess with astronaut Paul (and beat Paul, of course). He asked to see the drawing of one of the artist pilot’s. He recognized faces, voices, emotions, fears and could read lips.

He said, ”I find things difficult to put out of my mind.”

Hal was all about reliability, analysis, facts, and solutions. On a good day, he put things together in orderly fashion. He was the ultimate synthesizer – fusing and blending all the data input to create the appropriate data output.

In the end, having a bad day, HAL went haywire; he no longer had big enough problems to solve. He over analyzed the little problems. He obsessed on what wasn’t working in his relationships with the crew. He actually plotted for and let a crew member get ‘lost in space’ because he thought there was scheming against him – which they was.

Owners of this long head line can care for and feed their HAL 9000 by engaging in big problems. The more complicated the better. Synthesizing pieces of fabric for an elaborate quilt or reorganizing entire corporations may suit Mr. HAL depending on other features in the hands.

The Super Computer head line has definite mental requirements to employ – large, important projects with massive data arrangement.

How much is enough? Watch your own good day and bad day results and adjust your cerebral control panel accordingly.

And some say, “It’s just a movie.”
